End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients are among the most vulnerable populations for poor outcomes of COVID-19. They have the highest rate of COVID-19 hospitalization among all Medicare beneficiaries - four times that of other seniors in the same age group, and 25 times more likely to die. For this reason, we recommend all dialysis patients speak to their primary provider and get vaccinated. Rogosin Chief Medical Officer, Jeffrey Silberzweig, MD, and other prominent nephrologists were recently interviewed by MedPage Today about vaccinating dialysis patients. You can read the article here.
Both the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are mRNA vaccines. New York State released a video explaining how mRNA vaccines work to safely protect individuals from COVID-19. You can watch it here. The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is a recombinant viral vector vaccine. Learn more about the vaccines at the CDC Website.
If you have already been vaccinated and you are on dialysis or are a transplant patient, you should talk to your nephrologist or transplant team about getting the latest booster shot. The CDC has a page dedicated to booster shots here.
To find out how to get tested for COVID-19, go to the CDC COVID-19 Testing Page.
Guidelines are constantly being updated so check back often.
